A community tool library has a reservation calendar. A new maintainer asks Claude Code to fix a date that stays full after a booking is cancelled. The assistant changes styling and then caching without preserving a reliable reproduction. A useful developer introduction to skills turns this task into evidence-based debugging, a bounded code change and repeatable checks. Use a local copy, fictional reservations and a practice branch, then capture the stable method for future work.
Verify participation before trusting a method
A skill packages instructions and resources and may contain scripts. Its loading and execution differ from an IDE extension, and the host's tools still determine what can run. Write the task card first: cancelling a fictional reservation should release capacity on the calendar. Limit the change to reservation state and the calendar read path, leaving fees and notifications outside the rehearsal. Preserve the build, startup instructions and one ordinary booking as a baseline.
For candidate discovery, check whether SkillPI Skill Finder is present. If missing, read its official repository instructions and enable it through a method supported by the host. Supply the task, language, test runner, allowed paths and required artifacts. Ask for sources, versions and conditions that would make a candidate unsuitable. Inspect the actual instructions, helpers and prerequisites before installation. Record the source revision and location and verify loading using the current host documentation.
Separate discovery, invocation and a useful result. A host may find a package without using it, and a report that follows a sequence may still consist of guesses. Ask which code or observed output supports each conclusion. With an incomplete practice input, the method should identify missing information. With a complete fixture, it should reproduce the same failure. Evidence on those cases establishes more than a visible skill name.
Reproduce the state and test a cause
Create a fictional drill, one date and two available places. Make two bookings to fill the date, cancel one and refresh under the documented rule. Capture the cancellation response, stored state, calendar response and displayed capacity. Confirm whether the contract requires immediate visibility or permits a cache interval and choose a bounded waiting condition accordingly. Use another tool as a control so a broad refresh does not hide the affected scope. Keep build and request identifiers with each run.
Trace cancellation writes, availability calculation, cache reads and component rendering. If storage shows a cancellation but the calendar response still reports zero places, compare a controlled cache-bypass read with the ordinary read. Keep the data and clock fixed while changing one condition. If the response is already correct while the page remains full, investigate component state or request refresh. Require a hypothesis to predict the next observation. Preserve a counterexample and return to the last proven boundary instead of changing several layers and guessing which change mattered.
After confirming a cause, add a check that detects the old behavior. Under the same tool and date, cancellation should leave one place, while the control tool remains unchanged. Repair the responsible invalidation or update path. Inspect repeated cancellation, cancellation failure and a concurrent booking for unintended effects. Assert the count and state, not only a successful response. Run identical input against old and repaired implementations and preserve the fail-to-pass comparison.
Bound code assistance to an explained change
Have the assistant state the call path, inputs, outputs and allowed scope before producing a small diff. Review dependencies, timing behavior, cache scope and error handling. When the repair changes a tool-date cache key, explain why that key reaches the intended records. Keep unrelated cleanup for a separate task unless the evidence requires it. Tests and documentation should preserve the agreed contract. Do not revise an expected value merely to make the check pass. Preserve failures and distinguish an unavailable environment from an unmet assertion.
For a later refactor of capacity calculation, save examples of correct behavior first and replace one function or interface boundary at a time. Replay the same checks and include error branches. Explanations should point to the current implementation and callers. The handoff records which commands executed and which were suggestions. A missing dependency or unavailable integration belongs in the gaps list with a reason and a way to complete the check.
Use Webapp Testing for the repaired calendar's browser regression. The verified listing describes Python and Playwright interaction with a running local app and scripts, screenshots and browser logs as artifacts. Supply startup instructions, fictional fixtures and expected states, and inspect rendered controls before acting. Prepare browser dependencies and review execution scope. The page check supplements unit and service assertions; it does not replace dedicated concurrency or consistency tests.
Capture a small project skill after the process works
Once the team has repeated the method successfully, capture its stable steps using the current host's official skill documentation. Specify a name, task description, required input, sequence and artifact format. Use the reservation investigation as an example: reproduction card, hypothesis and comparison, bounded patch, regression and handoff. Put lengthy references in separate files with clear entry points. Document script dependencies and paths. The fictional drill identifier is an example, not a permanent business rule, and an unproven incident hypothesis should not become project guidance.
Keep positive and negative evaluation inputs. A reservation-state defect should fit; simple copy polishing should not. Missing build or fixture information should prompt a precise gap report. Add a hypothesis contradicted by the observed result and check whether the method updates its diagnosis. Ask a second maintainer to replay the task and judge whether the artifacts support takeover. If automatic selection is unreliable, inspect the description, name conflicts and loading scope. A successful explicit invocation does not prove reliable automatic activation. Version the method and replay these cases after changes.
Hand off and maintain the result
Include the upstream revision, installation location, fixture, patch, check output and page evidence. Another maintainer should be able to explain where the first discrepancy occurred, why the repair changes the result and which branches remain untested. Before restoring an older implementation, confirm it can consume the current practice records and replay an ordinary reservation afterward. Trial a new skill against a demonstrated gap and compare the same cases before changing a relationship. Review time, wrong repairs and rework help assess benefit; call counts and the number of process steps cannot establish correct delivery.
Common questions
Does root-cause analysis apply to frontend work?
Express the symptom through state, input and observable output. The page, service and cache can each affect what is displayed. Let evidence identify the boundary and use tools suited to the project's language and environment.
Can many installed skills conflict or slow a run?
Same names, overlapping triggers, tool overhead and contradictory guidance can cause problems. Record enabled packages and trial one change at a time on the same task. On-demand loading does not establish zero overhead for every configuration.
How can I tell the skill took effect?
Check discovery, invocation and results separately. Look for use of the current fixture, a tested hypothesis and a meaningful executed check. Repeating the method's name or offering an unexecuted test is not a pass.
Can I share a method I wrote?
Remove credentials and real records, document prerequisites, scope, version and failure handling, and evaluate positive and negative cases. Tell recipients which environment was tested. A new host still needs its own loading and tool checks.
