An amateur chess league maintains a results website. Its organizer wants “absent” and “not entered yet” to appear as distinct states. After several Codex-assisted changes, each session still begins with another explanation of the directories and scoring rules, while older notes sometimes disagree with the current branch. Start advanced configuration with three inspectable artifacts: repository working agreements, traceable background and a verified task handoff. Use fictional players and a local practice site. Progress is measured through results rather than a seven-day promise or an installation count.
Make behavior rules executable agreements
Preserve the project location, branch, existing diff, startup command and ordinary sample. Confirm the contract: absence is known non-participation, while an unentered result remains unknown. Specify display wording separately from exported values so a clearer interface does not silently break consumers. Limit this task's files and acceptance conditions: the states differ, ordinary scores stay unchanged and the old export consumer still reads the file. Evaluate configuration through those observable outcomes.
Record stable facts and constraints such as module entry points, check commands, generated-file handling and synthetic-data requirements. AGENTS.md can hold enduring repository agreements, while phase records and execution logs hold this task's progress; OpenAI's workflow example illustrates that division. Other project files are conventions rather than a guarantee of automatic reading in every session. Give the task a clear entry point and ask which material and scope the assistant actually used.
Write observable requirements. After changing result states, run the existing state checks and inspect the two fictional players, rather than asking only for high quality. Keep temporary exploration in the task record. Start a new session from the intended directory and reconcile instructions, current source and working changes. If behavior diverges, determine whether loading, scope, obsolete guidance or missing task information explains it before editing the responsible material.
When another coding host is also used, verify its instruction mechanism separately. AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md are not automatically synchronized merely because both exist. Share business facts and acceptance rules while preserving host-specific entry points and formats. Replay the same task after a rule change. Remove conflicting or repeated instructions and avoid converting every incidental failure into a global prohibition that makes routine work difficult to explain.
Make background traceable and current
Prepare a background card with state definitions, data flow, file locations and known consumers. Tie important facts to current code, a business contract or an identified owner's confirmation. Keep unresolved questions separate: a historical null might represent unknown or absent, and that meaning remains a question until confirmed. A team document or notebook can store background, but the active task needs access and an identified authoritative revision.
A file called memory is not proof the host will retain or read it. Supply the entry point, open relevant passages and compare them with the current branch. If an external notebook is unavailable, describe the gap and use a confirmed repository summary for independent work. Record its date and source rather than allowing stale notes to override a new implementation. Keep real player contacts and account material out of the practice package and share only the necessary context.
A handoff should contain the objective, confirmed facts, changed files, commands, observed results and next action. If mapping is repaired but the legacy export consumer remains unchecked, state that gap. The next session inspects the working tree, confirms the referenced diff exists and repeats a critical check. If a log says the repair is complete but the branch has no change, reconcile branches and revisions before relying on the claim. Background aids location; files and evidence establish the present state.
Review stale material periodically and retain the reason and historical reference instead of copying rules into many places. When a scoring rule changes, update its authoritative source and identify affected tests and pages. Ask an uninvolved maintainer to explain the state distinction and verification from the entry point. Their questions expose missing context. Track maintenance effort so reduced conversational explanation is not purchased with a growing set of inconsistent documents.
Capture practice through a task card
State the trigger, intended result, allowed paths, input revision and verification. Have Codex trace parsing to display and propose a bounded edit. Prepare two boundary records and an ordinary score, observe the old confusion and modify the responsible mapping. Run existing checks and inspect page and export behavior. Preserve environment and dependency failures as unavailable checks; a proposed command is not an executed result.
Webapp Testing fits the interface acceptance step. Its verified listing describes Python and Playwright on a running local app, producing scripts, screenshots and browser logs. Supply startup instructions, the three fictional records and expected text. Prepare browser dependencies, establish execution scope and inspect rendered controls before acting. Check export compatibility separately with the original consumer or a contract fixture.
After completion, capture the reusable lesson: the entry point, cause, repair boundary, detecting sample and remaining limits. Put durable facts in project guidance or background, a repeated method in a skill and one-time progress in the task log. Copying the full conversation into enduring instructions makes the useful fact harder to find. Ask the next maintainer to replay one state check from the record to establish that the lesson can guide action.
For discovery assistance, check whether SkillPI Skill Finder is installed. If missing, read its official repository instructions and enable it using a supported host method. Search against the capability gap and inspect the source, revision, prerequisites and artifact of each candidate. Trial the same sample. A package for another host's settings is not automatically Codex guidance because its title contains “expert.” Record its step and limitations when adopting it.
The current OpenAI skills documentation describes a name, description and full instructions with explicit selection and task-based matching. Verify discovery, invocation and result separately. Catalog descriptions and loaded instructions use context, so inspect naming, scope and useful content as the installed set grows. A stable task method needs clear triggers and non-applicable conditions and positive and negative trials. More installed items do not guarantee zero overhead or a better result.
Common questions
Will configuration preserve every past lesson in every session?
Do not assume it. Supply entry points and verify access, keeping important assertions linked to evidence. Session history, project files and host features have distinct roles. Check what the current version actually supports.
What if detailed rules make the work rigid?
Identify duplication, obsolete guidance and conflicts and compare the same task before and after simplification. Keep necessary enduring boundaries while letting the task card and current code guide implementation. Flexibility is not a reason to remove real access constraints.
Can a lesson log be updated automatically?
When updating records is part of the authorized task, ask for evidence-backed entries in the agreed location and inspect the diff. Assign maintenance and cleanup, keeping guesses, credentials and one-time errors out of durable facts.
Does the same configuration work on another host?
Business rules may transfer, but loading locations, tool interfaces and extension fields need separate checking. Rehearse the same task rather than generalizing success from one host to every environment.
How do we decide which configuration to keep?
Observe repeated explanation, wrong edits, rework and takeover time while preserving correctness. Compare equivalent input and completion criteria, retain helpful agreements and simplify complexity whose benefit cannot be demonstrated.
