Choose Cursor add-ons by task: efficiency methods, Git delivery and performance diagnosis

Distinguish plugin bundles from skills and use a fictional materials-documentation change to select bounded methods, inspect diffs and measure bottlenecks.

Before adding capabilities to Cursor, identify why the task is going poorly. Missing requirements, a project that cannot start, an unreviewable patch and a frozen editor need different responses. None automatically means that five add-ons are missing. This guide covers efficiency methods, development and Git delivery, and performance tuning through a fictional craft workshop's materials-documentation site. It aims to clarify units and repair a local preview journey, with inspectable evidence rather than an actual production publication or a claimed benchmark result.

Identify the component before installing it

“Add-on” is an informal label, not a precise technical type. An editor extension, individual skill, rule, tool connection and plugin bundle may coexist without sharing an installation procedure. The Cursor plugin documentation explains that plugins can combine several components. An individual skill therefore does not automatically provide Git integration or system-performance tooling. Inspect the component list and requested access first. Use five checkpoints for the materials site: task scope, project context, suitable method, verification evidence and recovery. These are this tutorial's review sequence, not five required products. A task that only reviews one paragraph does not need production credentials or broad repository-writing access. The number of installed tools is not a substitute for explicit inputs and outputs. Prepare synthetic material records and a test directory, preserving existing work. The known issue is that a size explanation mixes millimetres and centimetres while a preview link leads to an outdated page. Acceptance requires unambiguous units, consistent example calculations and navigation to the correct preview. Material safety, manufacturing dimensions and commercial promises remain facts for the responsible owner, not guesses made by the agent.

Scenario one: improve efficiency by removing a defined source of rework

Replace “make the instructions professional” with a bounded request: review only the material-dimension section, identify unclear units, measurement objects and conversions, and return locations, reasons and suggestions without changing technical facts. Begin with SkillPI Skill Finder, then inspect candidate source, revision, licence and prerequisites rather than choosing by installation count. The verified Writing Guidelines package fits technical prose review. It needs the target document and associated writing handbook. The Vercel agent-skills repository offers a documented method with an MIT licence, making reuse more appropriate than inventing a generic productivity plugin. It does not certify material data or decide product specifications. Separate findings into sentences that can be clarified and facts requiring owner confirmation. A phrase such as “leave a border of 2” lacks a unit; a reviewer should raise that question rather than silently choosing centimetres. After the owner confirms the meaning, ask the agent to edit only the approved passage and compare the diff. The improvement is fewer revisions caused by ambiguity, not an unsupported percentage saving. The stage output includes a findings register, fact-confirmation record and limited prose patch. If the handbook cannot be retrieved, state that the review basis is incomplete. A network failure is not a reason to install a different package from an unknown source and claim equivalent validation. A useful method also has an exit condition: every accepted suggestion points to a passage, the underlying fact has an owner and unresolved questions remain visible. This makes the review reusable when the next material page appears, without assuming every page requires the same wording.

Scenario two: connect development and Git delivery to one behaviour

For the incorrect preview link, locate its source, target page and routing rule before editing. Ask for a minimal plan. Do not replace the directory structure, component library and build tool at the same time. After the change, inspect each affected link and decide whether handling the old address belongs to this task. Preserving external references may need a separate compatibility plan. Use Webapp Testing on the running local documentation site. Inspect the page, then test catalog-to-material, material-to-preview and the return path. It needs relevant Python and browser dependencies, a startup command, address and synthetic inputs. It is not a Git manager and does not establish production deployment or real-user accessibility. An unrun check must not be reported as passing. For Git, inspect workspace status and distinguish existing changes from this contribution. Review the complete diff and then the staged diff. A description should explain the unit clarification and restored preview entry rather than claiming to optimise everything. If repository convention separates prose and routing into logical commits, follow it. Do not rewrite shared history simply to make the presentation cleaner. For conflicts, read both intentions. One branch may rename the material while another repairs the link. Choosing an entire side can remove a necessary behaviour. Inspect the merged unit explanation, destination and relevant checks. Ask the agent to explain decisions and unresolved questions. If the intent is unclear, list the choice requiring review rather than guessing. Commit, push and production release remain distinct authorised operations. If considering another coding environment, compare the same small task, starting snapshot and acceptance conditions. Record total completion time, corrections, unrelated edits and actual cost. Without current evidence, do not claim that a named tool must be faster. No unverified comparison or Git-specific SkillPI package is attached here; required human decisions remain explicit. The deliverable is a small patch whose behaviour and limits another maintainer can explain. A generated commit message helps describe it, but cannot replace looking at the changes. Keep the original project work intact throughout the exercise.

Scenario three: tune performance from a symptom and baseline

Distinguish editor freezing, slow indexing, delayed model output and a slow local preview website. Record version, project size, action sequence and time. Reproducing the issue in a small project containing only the relevant page is a useful clue, not proof of the cause. If the problem appears only in a large workspace, inspect generated output, duplicated dependencies, archives and unrelated directories. Adjust scope through currently supported settings, preserving the original configuration and changing one factor at a time. If the preview page itself is slow, inspect resource loading and visible behaviour rather than blaming editor indexing. For network errors, retain redacted diagnostics and time and respect organisational policy. Do not disable certificate checking or alter a working system proxy as a shortcut. Performance changes need a comparable result: the same project and operation in similar conditions, with before-and-after duration, resource observations and preserved behaviour. Being quicker because necessary files or checks were skipped is not an improvement. A skill can include scripts, external calls and additional context, so installing more packages cannot be guaranteed to have negligible cost. If no verified package fits the performance concern, conduct the bounded manual diagnosis instead. Do not relabel prose review or browser testing as a system-tuning specialist. If the cause remains uncertain, deliver symptoms, ruled-out factors and the next responsible owner. Repeatedly installing more candidates is not a substitute for a reproduction. The output is an optimisation note that identifies what changed, what was measured, whether coverage remained constant and what is still unknown. A temporary recovery after restart should remain an observation until the original action is repeatedly successful under understood conditions.

Accept one complete materials-page change

Use fictional record M31 and one obsolete preview route as fixed fixtures. Save the original passage, original link and owner-confirmed units. Apply the technical writing review and edit only approved facts. Repair the link, then verify in the test environment that the destination title and body belong to M31. A changed address alone does not establish that the correct content loaded. Preserve the patch, browser actions and results, and reasons any project checks were not run. Have a maintainer reproduce the journey using the runbook. This article has not run that demonstration; readers need their own evidence. Production publication requires verification in the actual environment, and local access does not mean a release is complete. Maintain a package register with source, revision, purpose, prerequisites, acceptance fixture and recovery method. Decide after the task which packages still have a current role. Before an update, inspect additional components, dependencies and access requirements and repeat the same fixture. A matching package name does not prove that its source is unchanged. If a later request adds a new material, reuse the acceptance structure while checking the new facts. Do not copy a previously approved measurement into another product without owner evidence. Reuse the process, not an assumption that all content is identical.

Frequently asked questions

Are plugins and skills identical? No. Inspect actual components and the host format. Must five packages be installed for productivity? No. Select a method for an identified gap, starting with Finder and verifying the target. Does a large installation count establish suitability? No. Task fit and acceptance evidence are more useful. Do skills consume no quota? Package licensing is separate from host plans, model usage and external services. No fixed saving is promised. Will another agent use the same configuration? Check standard support, paths, tools and permissions rather than assuming identical behaviour. Does uninstalling restore every edit? No. The package and generated files are different objects, so preserve backups and diffs. A useful capability plan can explain which rework disappeared, which navigation path was repaired, what bottleneck was observed and what remains unknown. That is a maintainable project improvement rather than a claim that every poor answer is caused by a user failing to install enough add-ons.
