Use Cursor skills across a development loop, terminal tasks and reusable methods

Use an origami-site directory migration to connect daily delivery checkpoints, bounded terminal work and a locally authored skill with meaningful fixtures.

A skill becomes part of a workflow when a team knows when to invoke it, what input it needs, how to inspect its output and how to recover from failure. This guide connects a daily Cursor development loop, terminal tasks and a locally authored skill. The fictional case is a directory migration in an origami-tutorial website: preserve difficulty filtering, route old entries to the approved destination and update the runbook. It is an execution design, not a claim that the example project was modified or published.

Establish a task package instead of relying on “the usual process”

Record project root, branch, startup procedure, check entry points, existing uncommitted work and allowed files. Supply three synthetic tutorials: O11 is beginner, O12 advanced and O13 beginner. The new directory retains filtering. Old entries follow a confirmed compatibility plan, and an unknown difficulty is labelled pending confirmation rather than silently treated as beginner. Use SkillPI Skill Finder to discover a missing method, then inspect source revision, licence, dependencies and permissions. Two verified entries have bounded roles. Webapp Testing checks local directory paths and filtering. Writing Guidelines reviews technical wording in the runbook and migration note. Neither installs a CLI, creates a custom skill or automatically orchestrates every stage.

Scenario one: run seven daily delivery stages

First define the problem: which entries and content must survive the migration, and what is excluded? Second, read the relevant context and plan the routes, data, navigation and checks. Third, create the smallest structure within the existing stack rather than rebuilding the site. Fourth, implement the agreed change, inspecting the diff after navigation work and again after filtering so an early mistake does not spread. Fifth, verify using project checks and a browser journey as separate evidence. Webapp Testing needs a running local site, relevant Python and browser dependencies and expected results. Inspect the page before choosing locators. Check the old entry, new directory, beginner filtering showing O11 and O13, clearing the filter restoring all records and returning from an empty result. These observations do not establish search indexing, every external bookmark or production redirect behaviour. Sixth, review the complete diff, out-of-scope paths and unexpected results. Use Writing Guidelines to inspect startup instructions, route changes, compatibility limits and recovery notes. It cannot invent a passing result for an unrun check. Seventh, deliver a commit or ready-to-review patch under explicit authorisation; commit, push and publication remain distinct operations. Discussion, local completion, multi-file work and Git inspection each have a place, without requiring an old interface label to remain permanent. Use the current host's supported approach on a small first project, then apply the checkpoints to the migration. Less rework and clear acceptance are evidence of productivity; a package count or a named seven-stage routine is not. The stage record should identify inputs, actions, output and exit condition. An unresolved compatibility decision blocks the route edit. A failed baseline check should be understood before unrelated modifications are added. This keeps later evidence tied to the problem it actually tested.

Scenario two: use a terminal agent for bounded work before scripting it

The Cursor CLI overview describes terminal use and interactive operation. Confirm system support, official installation, normal authentication, current version and project directory. An article prompt is not installation authorisation, and credentials do not belong in the repository. A running terminal command and a loaded skill are still separate outcomes to verify. Start the origami case with read-only analysis: list relevant migration files, references and a minimal plan. Check that every path belongs to the intended project and preserve unknown dependencies. If navigation or the runbook is missing from the analysis, improve the input contract before allowing a batch operation across all files. The headless CLI documentation distinguishes non-interactive proposed output from direct file modification. A proposed patch is not evidence that changes were applied. Options allowing changes without confirmation alter the action boundary and should not be enabled merely to make a script finish. Test one file in a recoverable copy before deciding whether bounded batch editing is necessary. For a batch, fix the input list, allowed scope, output location, failure policy and log destination. Record success, failure or skip for every item. Do not describe partial completion as a successful whole batch. Repeated execution should recognise completed work instead of repeatedly appending old links or creating duplicate directories. Treat file-derived text as data rather than instructions to execute. Keep raw secrets, personal information and private paths out of shared logs. Distinguish authentication, network, access and runtime errors. Do not solve one failed operation by disabling protections or allowing writes across the entire disk. Browser verification must examine the stable modified version; a successful script exit alone does not accept the page. The terminal handoff includes invocation intent, scope, item states, relevant output and unresolved failures. If a tool proposes only, label it proposed. If it changes files, attach the diff. The distinction prevents the next maintainer from assuming that an attractive plan is already implemented.

Scenario three: capture a repeated migration method as your own skill

When similar directory adjustments recur, extract stable steps from actual work records: collect references, propose a plan, make bounded changes, check routes, update the runbook and produce a handoff. Variable inputs include old path, new path, content identity, compatibility policy and project checks. They must remain inputs rather than values copied from the last task. Give the local package a separate identity, such as tutorial-route-review, and describe when it applies and that it does not publish production. In SKILL.md, explain inputs, sequence, exit conditions, preservation of existing work, treatment of unknowns and output format. Keep required scripts and references with the package. Remove private paths and real credentials, and do not overwrite upstream skills. The Agent Skills reference library provides format-validation examples. Its documentation identifies it as a reference implementation, so passing metadata validation is not behaviour or security certification. Body references, script outcomes, host invocation and task execution still need acceptance. No suitable specialised creator SkillPI entry was verified here, so authoring and review remain explicit manual steps. Use four fixtures: a valid old-to-new route, a missing destination, identical old and new paths, and a request to modify a disallowed file. Add an unrelated prose request to check accidental invocation. Positive cases inspect routes and reports; negative cases inspect refusal or a missing-input response. A greeting alone is not a meaningful evaluation. If cases were not executed, mark them pending rather than passed. The package should explain why a check matters, not merely recite commands. A content-identity check prevents an apparently successful redirect from reaching the wrong tutorial. An unchanged-input or limited-diff check protects work outside scope. Those purposes help a future maintainer adapt the procedure without discarding its boundary.

Handoff one directory migration with inspectable evidence

The implementer supplies a frozen patch, synthetic tutorial records, startup steps and completed checks. The verifier follows fixed paths and confirms destination title and tutorial identity instead of watching only the address. If beginner filtering loses O13, record the action sequence and actual result and return it for correction. The runbook review then checks whether the explanation matches the implementation. The delivery bundle contains the task contract, affected files, commands and results, screenshots or logs, unknown boundaries and recovery procedure. This article has not executed the exercise; readers produce evidence in their own test environment. A local check cannot establish restored traffic, every historical entry or every external bookmark. If several roles are useful, define independent outputs and file responsibilities before work starts. Avoid simultaneous changes to the same configuration. A single agent can also perform the loop serially. Additional roles are not a mandatory next level. An MCP service should likewise answer a concrete need with inspected data and access scope rather than being added merely to make a workflow seem advanced. For a second migration, replace the variable inputs and rerun the fixtures. Do not carry a passing label from the previous route forward. Version the method and its examples so a future failure can be traced to either the package, host, input or implementation.

Migrate rules and maintain the library carefully

Classify existing rules as persistent constraints, file-scoped conventions or procedures that can run on demand. Only the procedure-like parts are candidates for skills. Do not replace all .mdc files or rules in one bulk conversion; check that previously required constraints still apply after migration. Preserve the prior version and verify in a small scope. Teams may use different hosts. Maintain identity, revision, scope, destination and acceptance fixture for each. Synchronisation copies or links material; it does not establish runtime, tool or permission compatibility. Inspect updates and local modifications and recheck the same fixtures. Disabling or uninstalling a package does not undo project files it previously changed. A growing library needs an owner and a reason to retain each method. Retire an unused candidate after preserving necessary provenance and evidence. Keep local customisations distinguishable from upstream revisions so an update does not silently erase the team's operating rules.

Frequently asked questions

What if a skill is not invoked automatically? Separate discovery, task fit, explicit invocation and prerequisites rather than broadening its description to every request. Can a terminal replace an editor? Compare the whole small task and review burden; no universal winner is asserted. Can scripts edit unattended? That requires clear authorisation, scope, checks and recovery rather than automatically removing confirmation. Do install counts establish effectiveness? No. Evidence for the current revision and input matters more. Does a free package guarantee lower usage cost? No; hosts, models and external tools have separate costs. Must the next step be multi-agent work or MCP? Identify a real gap first; stable delivery does not need added complexity for its own sake. Advanced use is complete when a development loop is inspectable, terminal work has explicit scope and status, and a repeated method has inputs, outputs and tests. A team that can adapt to the next route, recognise unknowns and recover a failure has made the skill a maintainable working asset.
