Polish, package and maintain a custom Claude skill with release evidence

Use a fictional terminology reviewer to refine boundaries, compare fixtures, build a reproducible package and learn from open-source methods responsibly.

Moving a custom Claude skill from “works in my conversation” to a shareable package involves three different jobs: improving the method, producing a reproducible release and learning useful patterns from the ecosystem. This guide uses a fictional community print studio's terminology-review skill. It reads approved documents and a supplied glossary and returns location-based potential inconsistencies. It does not silently rewrite documents, transmit them elsewhere or treat every stylistic difference as a factual error. The workflow below is a release design, not a claim that a package has already passed it.

Establish an inspectable contract for the existing skill

Reduce the responsibility to one sentence: review specified files against the supplied glossary and report location, original expression, suggested term, basis and uncertainty; report possible exceptions without automatic replacement. Inputs identify allowed files, glossary revision and exception policy. Outputs have fixed fields and should not reproduce entire private documents. Begin with SkillPI Skill Finder, then inspect candidate source, revision, licence and permissions. The verified Writing Guidelines package has one bounded role here: reviewing the skill's usage instructions and technical handoff. It needs the document and associated writing handbook. It does not execute glossary validation, assess release safety or upload to a registry. No suitable specialised packaging or publishing SkillPI entry was verified, so those checks remain explicit manual work.

Polish the design by separating decisions, examples and long references

Read the current SKILL.md and mark duplicate responsibilities, overbroad invocation, missing exceptions and unsupported promises. Narrow “handle all writing work” to reviewing the studio's instructions against a specified glossary. Exclude creative copy, translation and factual verification so one package does not pretend to make unrelated decisions. Keep input confirmation, reading sequence, decision procedure, output and failure handling in the core instructions. Move long glossary explanations, domain exceptions and large samples into clearly referenced resources loaded when relevant. After splitting, check that references exist and define what happens when one is missing. A shorter body is not an improvement if essential prerequisites are hidden in material the agent never retrieves. Add a contrastive example. If the glossary prefers one printing term and the document uses a near-synonym, flag it for confirmation with the applicable glossary entry. If the expression occurs inside a historical quotation, apply the approved exception policy rather than rewriting the quote. The example teaches a decision boundary, not a rule to replace every similar word. There is no universal word count that fits all packages. Keep necessary information reachable and measure the actual effect of a revision rather than equating fewer words with a guaranteed cost saving. The open-source Anthropic skill-creator example is useful for studying iterative authoring and evaluation. It is a reference here, not a claimed linked SkillPI package or an executed tool. Change one main factor per iteration, such as description or exception handling, and compare the same fixtures with the previous revision.

Evaluate progress with positive, negative and held-out examples

Prepare normal terminology, an approved exception, a missing glossary, an empty document, a disallowed path and an unrelated request. Reserve additional synthetic documents that were not used during editing so the skill is not accepted merely for memorising its demonstration. Inspect invocation, known missed inconsistencies, false alarms, out-of-scope access and completeness of output fields. Use separate observations rather than one score that conceals an access violation. Output structure can be stable without identical wording. Every suspected inconsistency must be traceable to a document location and glossary entry. Mark unexecuted cases pending. For a failure, preserve steps, expectation and observation. After adjusting the relevant rule, repeat older cases so a correction does not create a regression elsewhere. Writing Guidelines can review whether usage instructions explain these prerequisites and errors clearly. The print-studio owner still confirms terminology meaning; the result is not linguistic or industry certification. If the linked handbook could not be retrieved, state that the review basis is incomplete instead of claiming that it was applied. The evaluation deliverable contains the input contract, fixtures, version, findings and remaining questions. A reader should be able to distinguish a new result from a passing label copied from an earlier package. A method that produces plausible prose without traceable findings has not met this example's objective.

Package a release that works outside the author's workspace

Use the Agent Skills specification to inspect identity, description and resource organisation, then check current requirements of the target host or registry. Do not turn one tutorial's prohibition on README files into a universal ecosystem rule. Required material depends on the format, destination and actual task. Include needed resources and exclude caches, credentials, private paths and raw business fixtures. Build a candidate artifact in a separate staging directory. Record its inventory, provenance, version and checksum. Extract a clean copy and inspect nesting, filenames, references, dependencies and sample inputs. Passing a format check does not establish behaviour, licence suitability or safety. Repeat important fixtures and host discovery and invocation separately. Release notes should state purpose, exclusions, input and output, runtime prerequisites, changes and known limits. Preserve a traceable package identity. Explain compatibility when behaviour changes instead of hiding a breaking change under “optimisation”. Account access, publishing scope and final submission content belong to an actual authorised release task; this article describes the workflow without uploading a reader's package. After publication, retrieve the artifact from the real download entry rather than continuing to test the local working copy. Compare revision and checksum, perform a clean install and example invocation and confirm that public instructions match the distributed contents. If a resource is missing, repair the artifact and repeat acceptance. Successful upload alone is not proof of usability. Keep release evidence connected to the artifact that was downloaded. A later source commit or edited working directory does not retroactively change what users received. If distribution formats differ, inspect each actual artifact rather than assuming one archive's acceptance covers them all.

Learn from the ecosystem without importing unsupported claims

Search for prior art by task and compare input contracts, boundaries, resources, failure handling and tests rather than simply collecting high-star repositories. Record repository, revision, relevant location, borrowed idea and licence. If a licence cannot be established, do not assume that copying and redistribution are permitted; a design observation can remain separate from reused material. One package might keep a large reference table outside its core file, while another documents a minimal reproduction for each error. Those patterns can inform the glossary reviewer, but the other project's test results and user counts do not become evidence for the new package. Before reusing code, prose or assets, inspect applicable licence and attribution requirements. Have the responsible owner resolve uncertain rights rather than treating “open source” as permission for every purpose. Record why a pattern was adopted and its cost. More resource files can help maintenance while increasing omission risk. More examples can clarify boundaries while encouraging overfitting to fixtures. Use the reserved examples to judge the result instead of assuming a fashionable structure must suit the project. An ecosystem study should finish with a few justified choices, not a large index with no operational consequence. Reject a pattern when its prerequisites or maintenance burden do not fit the small terminology task. The point is a clearer, testable method rather than resemblance to another popular package.

Troubleshooting and frequently asked questions

What if a longer description triggers less reliably? Return to task signals and exclusions and check whether unrelated purposes were added. What if the packaged version fails? Compare artifact and workspace resources, nesting and runtime and reproduce the missing piece first. What if findings look reasonable but have no location? Revisit the location contract; mark uncertainty instead of inventing line numbers. Is publication the end? No. Recheck after relevant host, model, dependency or glossary changes and maintain a feedback route and version history. Should updates overwrite every installation? Compare local modifications and preserve rollback. Removing a package cannot undo earlier reports. Are all packages free and cheaper to execute? Check licensing separately from platform, model and external-service costs. The fictional release is complete only when its contract, fixtures and results, reproducible inventory, release instructions and prior-art register are inspectable. Explaining why a revision was made, what it verified and what remains unknown is what turns a personal prompt into a maintained shared method.
