Find agent skills by task, compare sources and verify installation evidence

Use SkillPI Skill Finder as a discovery method, compare candidate identities and prerequisites, and accept a target through bounded synthetic-data evidence.

A skill finder turns a task into inspectable candidates. It does not authorise execution for the user or guarantee that every result is safe and usable. Names such as Deep Skill Finder are often used for discovery tools; this guide uses SkillPI Skill Finder's public method to explain getting started, comparing sources and checking a proposed installation. The example is a synthetic exhibition-volunteer time-slot CSV. The task is structure and missingness review, without changing schedules, sending messages or reading real personnel data.

Describe the input, action and output before searching

Avoid a request as broad as automation or data analysis. The example brief is: inspect an authorised local CSV of demonstration time slots, summarise missing fields, types and duplicate risks, write an aggregate report and preserve input. Add host, operating system, available Python, data boundary, budget preference and exclusions. This helps reject candidates requiring cloud uploads, account access or automated staffing decisions. Natural language expresses goals and constraints; keywords remain useful for exact formats, product names and identities. They can work together. Semantic recommendation depends on the particular implementation and index, so a tool name does not establish its algorithm or hit rate. Without a public reproducible evaluation, do not repeat claims of approximately ninety-percent accuracy or a fixed advantage over keyword search. Preserve the task and query date. Changed results may reflect an updated index, revised descriptions, filters or source availability. They do not automatically mean that the capability disappeared. Search evidence should be dated and tied to what was actually accessible.

Scenario one: start with SkillPI Finder and inspect its boundary

Read README, SKILL.md, licence and current revision in the official SkillPI Skill Finder repository before installing or enabling it through supported host mechanisms. It is an MIT-licensed discovery-method package. Installation text is not permission for every later download or execution. Record its source and destination and verify that the host can discover and invoke it for a stated task. Its skill instructions describe understanding the task, inspecting sources, vetting candidates and returning a short list. Those are steps to execute with evidence, not guarantees that happen automatically. If an actual detail page says unscanned or permissions unknown, preserve that state. A broad statement in a finder's instructions cannot transform missing evidence into a passed check. A useful search request is: find a package for local CSV aggregate profiling, prefer task-matched candidates with readable sources, explain formats and dependencies and do not install the target. The expected response includes name, origin, reason for fit, prerequisites, access, limits and next action rather than bare links. If no candidate qualifies, say so instead of completing a quota with unrelated tools. The verified task candidate in this example is Exploratory Data Analysis. Its role is bounded aggregate exploration of authorised local data, with Python 3.11 or later for core tools. It does not silently change raw input or produce staffing decisions or causal conclusions. It executes a data task; it is not a cross-platform search engine. A shared word such as analysis does not justify extending its scope. The initial output is a task contract plus a small inspected candidate set. It should be clear which part was found, which part was read and which part remains untested. This is a more useful result than describing every recommendation as already validated.

Scenario two: compare sources without losing identity or time

Inspect suitable, source-readable SkillPI listings first, then expand to open registries or GitHub when necessary. The same short name can identify a mirror, fork or unrelated package. Deduplicate using author, repository, directory and revision rather than the display name alone. Build a comparison register with task coverage, input formats, runtime, network and file access, licence, maintenance evidence, source location and review date. Install counts, download counts and stars have different definitions; do not add them across platforms or treat them as safety scores. Unknown figures stay unknown, and historical counts are not live observations. For the time-slot example, a local CSV package fits the stated boundary while a service demanding a whole-table upload does not. A package focused on images should not survive final selection merely because its description also mentions data analysis. Evaluate actual instructions, resources and prerequisites rather than card keywords. Keep source found, main document read, attachments inspected and sample executed as separate states. Reading one file does not establish that every script was reviewed. Static inspection is not runtime safety. Several catalogs pointing to the same repository are not several independent pieces of evidence. If wider discovery still fails, check whether the task is too broad, uses another language or format term, or has a restrictive filter. Record sources actually checked and access limitations. No result is not proof that the entire ecosystem lacks a capability; it can mean incomplete indexing, inaccessible sources or no package matching the present boundary. The comparison should end with reasons to select and reject. That decision record can be refreshed later without repeating the entire investigation from memory. It also prevents popularity from silently replacing fit when a new package enters a ranking.

Scenario three: install against concrete access and complete contents

Inspect the chosen source revision, licence, scripts, references and dependencies. Identify exactly which files it reads, where it writes, which domains it contacts, whether it accesses credentials and whether it can incur charges. Keep checks related to the real task rather than requesting unrelated permissions for hypothetical concerns. A favourable badge is not a permanent execution pass. Install or enable Finder before installing the selected target skill. Give the two packages separate provenance, scope and acceptance records. Retrieve the complete target directory so referenced resources are not lost. After an installer returns success, inspect actual files and host discovery and make an explicit invocation. Confirm current host paths and loading rather than assuming all agents behave identically. For the synthetic time-slot table, begin with aggregate profiling only. Include one missing slot and one type anomaly, then check whether findings correspond to those fixtures, input remains unchanged and coverage is explicit. Unsupported input should fail clearly rather than trigger an unapproved cloud upload or unknown tool. Establish the procedure on synthetic data before discussing authorised real material. This article has not installed a package or analysed the demonstration data. These are reader acceptance steps. Installation and discovery do not establish that a report is correct; the responsible owner must check expected findings. Removing the target cannot retract an earlier generated report, so retain file and project-diff records for recovery. The accepted result should identify its environment and input. A report from one revision cannot simply be carried forward to an updated package or a different host. Repeat the affected layers when prerequisites change.

Deliver a recommendation that another maintainer can inspect

A short list needs only a few genuinely qualified candidates, each with fit and rejection reasons. State the final recommendation conditionally: preferred under local CSV, current Python and read-only aggregate constraints, not for every analysis task. If a dependency is missing, report it before expanding the environment. Save the contract, query and date, candidate sources, actual inspection depth, selection reason, unresolved issues, installation record and sample result. As the catalog grows, refresh against the same contract. Compare newly supported inputs, maintenance or a smaller dependency burden. A new result is not an automatic reason to overwrite a working package. Refreshing also checks old links, changed provenance, licence or access changes and whether the accepted fixture still works. Update a public topic's skill association when a new candidate has better task fit and evidence, not merely because its ranking changed. Keep dates and source records so another reviewer can reconstruct the choice. If a previously accepted candidate becomes unavailable, distinguish a broken link from a removed capability. Preserve its last known identity and review state while seeking an alternative. Do not quietly substitute a same-name package from a different author.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a finder? It is a discovery and comparison entry point that may use keywords, indexes or semantic methods; inspect its implementation. Are results trustworthy? Evaluate the actual evidence, keep unknowns explicit and remember that a scan cannot cover every future runtime. What if nothing is found? Narrow the task, check filters and source availability and consider a manual method instead of inventing a skill URL. Is everything free? Finder licensing differs from target-package pricing, host-model usage and external-service charges. Does presence in several registries establish reliability? It may only reflect mirrors, so inspect original authorship and revision. Can the process be one click? A convenient entry can reduce operations, but discovery, authorisation, installation, invocation and task acceptance remain different events. The goal is a usable choice under an explicit boundary with enough provenance and fixture evidence for the next maintainer. Discovery earns its value through task fit and verified results rather than an unsupported catalog size or hit-rate claim.
