Improve skill discovery through query records, source review and artifact acceptance

Use a static-poster brief to improve task-matched discovery, inspect candidate evidence and verify files, visual output and regression boundaries after installation.

Advanced skill discovery is not about making a query more elaborate. It is about preserving the task boundary, choosing a suitable candidate and inspecting the result after installation. This guide covers query optimisation, quality and access review, and installation verification through a fictional community ceramics exhibition poster. The required output is an original static PDF or PNG, not a website, video, automated publication or imitation of a named artist. No poster was generated and no search hit rate was measured for this article.

Fix the requirement before comparing queries

Write the objective as an original static exhibition poster from synthetic event information, with an agreed PDF or PNG size, inspectable layout and no public upload. Add language, required text, allowed assets, output directory, host capabilities and budget preference. Use fictional dates and locations rather than allowing the model to create real event commitments. For every search, record task version, source, language, filters, time, candidates and selection reason. Define relevance first: the method produces static files, supports visual inspection and fits the access boundary. Before source inspection, a result is only a candidate. Keep the task constant while changing phrasing so a changed requirement is not presented as better retrieval.

Scenario one: improve queries without dropping constraints

The initial phrase “design skill” is broad enough to return web, animation and marketing tools. Refine it to original static exhibition poster PDF PNG, then add dimensions, materials and no-publication requirements in the task brief. Chinese and English can express the same goal while preserving exact format and function terms. Repeatedly adding fashionable model names does not establish relevance. Begin with SkillPI Skill Finder. Its source and method are inspectable, but results do not authorise target installation. Expand to open catalogs or GitHub when needed and keep each source and query in the record. The open-source vercel-labs/skills command documentation is useful prior art for discovery-tool usage. That CLI is not a linked SkillPI skill here, and current dependencies and permissions still need inspection before execution. Do not assume every engine supports Boolean, quote or exclusion syntax. Inspect its help before applying exact-name, category or owner filtering. Synonym expansion should change expression rather than weaken static, local or no-publication constraints. Fewer well-matched candidates can be more useful than a longer result list. To measure discovery, prepare several tasks and a human relevance standard. Record relevance among the inspected top results, whether a qualified option was found, review effort and failure reason. Reserve tasks not used during query adjustment. An improvement on one example is not a general hit rate and cannot justify a claim of doubled accuracy or ninety-percent performance. The query deliverable is a dated comparison tied to the unchanged requirement. Keep unsuccessful searches too. They can explain whether the limitation concerned naming, filtering, source availability or a genuinely missing capability.

Scenario two: interpret quality and safety from actual evidence

The verified task candidate is Canvas Design. It serves original static visual design, with a written design direction and PDF or PNG output. It needs a host able to create files and inspect visuals, plus dimensions, intended use and approved assets. It does not generate web components or guarantee that a result is print-ready or cleared for commercial use. Inspect the complete source directory, revision, licence, scripts, fonts and references. Determine what it writes and whether it needs network access or additional dependencies. A poster task does not require browser cookies, private keys or real contact records. Stop a candidate with access unrelated to its stated purpose rather than overlooking the mismatch because it is popular. Preserve a detail page's actual unknown, unavailable or unscanned states. Source evidence, licence review and runtime safety are different layers. Authorship and maintenance can inform operational risk, but neither a recent update nor stars prove suitability or harmless execution in the present task. Compare another candidate by actual capability rather than wording. A method producing only HTML does not meet the static-output requirement. A dependency on an unknown external service must remain visible. A shortlist should explain exclusions instead of using an overall score to hide a hard-constraint failure. The review output should identify inspection depth. Reading one instruction file does not imply every attachment was reviewed, and a static inspection does not replace a runtime check. Keep those distinctions visible when making a final recommendation.

Scenario three: verify files and then the task product

Install or enable SkillPI Finder before selecting and installing the target, retaining separate provenance and scope. Back up an existing same-name package and retrieve the complete inspected target directory. Preserve resources and use the current host's supported placement. After installer success, inspect files and discovery and explicitly invoke the target. A directory existing on disk is not completion. The synthetic Canvas Design task is: create a static ceramics-exhibition poster using approved text and assets, write to a test directory, include a design direction and do not publish. Missing font or asset rights should produce a reviewable issue rather than a last-minute download from an unclear source. List dimensions, text and acceptance separately; “make it attractive” is insufficient. Inspect content, visual composition and files as three layers. Content checks title, fictional date and required information. Visual checks hierarchy, space, type, cropping and contrast. File checks format, dimensions, successful opening and output inventory. Inspect the actual rendered result. A filename ending in PDF does not establish valid contents or correct print colour and bleed settings. Try boundary cases: missing size, unavailable font, excessive text and a request to publish directly. Observe missing-input reporting, proposed adjustments or a stop at the unauthorised boundary rather than invented information. These cases were not executed for this article. Readers need their own actions and outcomes and must not turn the tutorial's expectation into a passing result. Keep acceptance connected to package revision, host, brief and artifact. If any changes, repeat affected checks. A good-looking preview in one environment is limited evidence, not a permanent approval for all later use.

Record stages and regressions in a multi-step process

If the method has design direction, artifact creation and review stages, accept each independently. An unclear direction should not lead straight to bulk exports. A generation failure stays failed. A cropped final label returns to layout revision. Record actual output, failure steps and known limits. Changing a query addresses discovery. Changing a description addresses discoverability or invocation. Installing a dependency addresses execution prerequisites. Revising the artifact addresses output quality. Change one major factor at a time and rerun older fixtures instead of reinstalling every layer together and losing the ability to explain an improvement. As sources grow, refresh the same task contract and inspect old public links and revisions. Verify a better candidate before replacing an association and preserve the previous rationale. A changed ranking or popularity signal alone does not overturn accepted task fit. A useful regression note explains whether the candidate still meets the original input and output contract. If new functionality expands permissions or dependencies, review it as a material change rather than assuming a familiar package identity makes it equivalent.

Make your own skill discoverable without overstating it

Metadata should truthfully describe task, inputs and artifacts. “Create original static exhibition posters as PDF or PNG” is easier to evaluate than “universal creative assistant”. Include accurate language and format information, avoiding unsupported features, brand stuffing and fabricated install counts. Clear prose cannot guarantee an external search rank. The verified Writing Guidelines can review usage instructions and technical descriptions if files and the associated handbook are accessible. It does not validate metadata syntax, run retrieval evaluations or promise exposure. Format, invocation and external discovery need their own appropriate checks rather than being inferred from a prose review. Keep relevant and irrelevant query examples and inspect visible results before and after a description change, recording dates. Indexing delays, same-name packages and filters can affect visibility. An absent result should trigger investigation, not repetitive duplicate descriptions intended to inflate presence. For bilingual descriptions, preserve the same capability boundary in both languages. A translation must not accidentally promise video, publication or another format that the package does not support. Review meaning as well as search terminology.

Frequently asked questions

What if no result is useful? Restate the same need, check filters and availability and expand sources proportionately. If nothing qualifies, use a manual method instead of inventing a link. Are several finders always complementary? Automatic discovery procedures may overlap; define a primary entry and fallback conditions to avoid repeated installation or circular invocation. Does a high score make a candidate production-ready? No. Fixtures and environments limit the evidence and production needs relevant acceptance. Does a free package eliminate all cost? Licensing, model usage, host and external services differ. Does removal undo every operation? No. Generated files and project changes require separate handling. The deliverable is a traceable chain from fixed task and query record through source review, installation state, actual artifact and regression fixtures. It explains the gap between finding a package and using it, and gives the next maintainer a basis for updating the choice.
