Searching GitHub for skill finder can return similarly named projects, forks, mirrors and different products. Similar names do not establish common authorship, and an installation command in a README is not a reason to execute it immediately. This guide uses the explicit Findskills/skillpi repository to demonstrate source identification, pre-install review and installation maintenance. It does not equate every service called Deep Skill Finder or guess another product's canonical repository.
Create a repository identity record first
Record complete owner and repository, project homepage, skill directory, exact revision, licence location, maintenance evidence and review date. Cross-check through known project or author links and then inspect the actual GitHub owner and history. Search rank, an icon or the word official in a name is not sufficient evidence. The discovery-method source here is the SkillPI Skill Finder repository. Its SKILL.md describes a task-to-candidate review procedure and the repository provides an MIT licence. The verifiable observation is that the method and files exist, not that every promotional claim about safety or performance has been independently established. Branches change, so an installation record must retain the revision actually selected. For example, a reader may need a structure review of a fictional book-fair materials CSV. Define authorised input, aggregate output and preservation of raw data before asking Finder for candidates. A discovery package with an identified source does not automatically authorise execution of everything it returns.
Scenario one: distinguish a source, fork and mirror
Use task terms and the project name, then inspect the strongest relevant repository's homepage and files. If it is marked as a fork, inspect upstream and the fork's changes. Absence of that label does not prove original authorship; a mirror or copy can have another relationship. Inspect README source links, history and artifact origins. Preserve unresolved identity instead of turning a guess into an official attribution. Add differences among same-name candidates: independent implementation or derivative, source coverage, runtime requirements and actual skill directory. Do not confuse a multi-skill repository root with the identity of one SKILL.md inside it. Install the needed package rather than implicitly loading every method in the repository. Read before executing. Inspect tree, instructions, licence, resources and examples and identify agent-readable guidance, executable scripts and external-service connections. Source download, dependency installation, account connection and publication are different actions. A request to find a repository does not imply all of them. If provenance remains unconfirmed, deliver candidate identities and missing evidence or continue an already permitted manual workflow. Do not reverse-engineer an imaginary GitHub URL from a same-name registry entry. Some services may not publish their source at all. The source-identification deliverable should allow another maintainer to retrieve the same material. A short name and a screenshot are weaker than owner, repository, directory and revision with a reason the source was selected.
Scenario two: review purpose, overlap and access before installation
Inventory existing skill identities and roles and compare whether a new candidate duplicates a step. Duplication is not always harmful, but several automatic finders can create repeated installation or circular invocation. Define the primary entry and fallback conditions rather than assuming distinct names justify installing all of them. A verified execution candidate for the book-fair example is Exploratory Data Analysis, for bounded structure and missingness profiling of authorised local tables. Its core tools need Python 3.11 or later and optional capabilities have further prerequisites. It does not silently modify raw data, make purchasing or staffing decisions or scan repository safety. Compare that scope with the source before considering target installation. Inspect reading scope, output location, scripts, references, domains and possible charges. Aggregate materials profiling does not require SSH private keys, browser cookies or personal account records. Reject an access mismatch with the stated task. Unknown permissions remain unknown and an active repository does not transform an unscanned listing into a safety guarantee. The open-source OpenSSF Scorecard project has documentation and an Apache-2.0 licence and is useful prior art for repository-health checks. Its heuristics can have false positives and false negatives and are not absolute safety certification. Scorecard was not run here and is not a linked SkillPI skill. Relevant code and behaviour still need review for the package actually adopted. Deliver a pre-install record identifying provenance state, licence, prerequisites, overlap, access, inspection depth and unresolved concerns. Installs, stars and recent commits are different signals, not numbers to add into one score that covers every risk.
Scenario three: install complete contents and verify real invocation
Install or enable SkillPI Finder from the inspected source first, then choose and install the target skill. Record source, revision, host, scope and destination separately for each. Read current installer help and prerequisites. Manual placement also needs the complete target directory: copying one SKILL.md may omit resources, while cloning a whole repository does not prove host loading. Windows, macOS and Linux can differ in paths and shell behaviour. Confirm the active environment rather than treating a Bash example as universal PowerShell syntax. Explain command purpose and expected write location before execution and keep credentials out of public scripts. Do not disable certificate verification, alter a working system proxy or grant whole-disk writes to force installation through. After placement, inspect files, resources, discovery and explicit invocation. For the synthetic materials CSV, include a missing quantity, a duplicate-risk case and unsupported input and request aggregate output only. Check output destination, unchanged raw input, coverage and error reporting. Passing a format or installation check does not establish report correctness; its owner still compares expected findings. No installation or exercise was executed for this article. Readers must save their own evidence. Download success, an existing directory and a zero exit status are not complete task acceptance. A local fixture also cannot establish every production-security property. The acceptance record should identify both environment and artifact. A package name alone cannot explain a later failure after its source, host or runtime changes. Keep the small synthetic example so another person can repeat the relevant layers without private business data.
Maintain updates and removal as inspectable operations
A register should contain current source revision, scope, local customisations, dependencies, fixture and recovery location. Separate checking for an update from applying it. Inspect script, resource, access and behavioural changes before rechecking a recoverable copy. Do not overwrite every installation with the latest default branch on a timer, especially where teams maintain local changes. Treat a same-name replacement from a different origin as a new selection. If a repository moves, preserve the previous identity and verify the new link rather than substituting a similarly named project. Repeat files, discovery, invocation and output checks after updating, retaining the old artifact and record. Uninstalling a package or registration does not reverse earlier reports, settings or business operations. Refresh topic associations against task fit and inspectable evidence. A more popular package is not necessarily better, and a dead link is not permission to fill the gap with any same-name result. Record the change reason and date so the next maintainer can continue the investigation. A manager can help perform mechanical work, but its own version and scope also need review. Delegating lifecycle operations is not a reason to stop observing the actual host and files. The source of truth, copies and generated output should remain distinguishable.
Write a repository handoff that separates facts from inference
Organise it as task, identity, pre-install review, installation state, fixture result, limits and next action with source locations. The verified Writing Guidelines can review technical handoff wording if the document and associated handbook are accessible. It does not verify authorship, execute security scans or install the target. Distinguish “the licence file is readable” from a judgment about a particular redistribution use. Likewise, test scripts existing is different from tests being executed and passing. If inspection is unavailable, state the limitation without inventing ratings, counts or release-validation records. The final recommendation should explain why the package fits the current task and which prerequisite could change that choice. A source record and explicit unknown are more useful than an unqualified official or safe label.
Frequently asked questions
Which repository is official? Identify the product first and cross-check its project and author entry points; skill finder is not a unique repository identity. Are Finder and the target the same? No. Enable discovery first and inspect each task candidate separately. Is one command universal across agents? Do not assume identical paths, runtimes or support. Should a failed install be retried from a mirror? Diagnose source availability, network, runtime and access first; alternative distribution still needs content verification. Does a free package permit every reuse? Inspect its licence and attribution requirements and consider model and external-service charges separately. Does a management skill remove maintenance work? No. It also has a revision and limits and its results need inspection. The outcome is an evidence chain from an identified repository to a reproducible task rather than a label promising official, safe, one-click success. Provenance, access, output and recovery must remain understandable for a GitHub project to become a maintained agent capability.
