Start with a task that produces evidence
A fictional community film archive maintains a React screening calendar. Its administrator wants to repair a filter that disappears after changing months, then hand the reproduction and acceptance method to a new teammate. This is a better first skill exercise than installing a large bundle: inputs, changed files and page behavior are observable, and the team can decide whether a method actually fits. A skill packages instructions in SKILL.md with optional scripts, references and templates. Installation makes the package discoverable in an appropriate environment. A discovered name does not prove invocation, and invocation does not prove a correct result. This guide separates setup, everyday development and maintenance. It does not report an actual installation or a test of the reader's application.
Scenario one: verify source, scope and discovery
Record the Cursor version, execution environment, workspace and whether work happens locally or remotely. Do not treat the original article's Beta/Nightly channel and master-toggle advice as a universal prerequisite. Consult current official documentation for the installed version before changing channels to chase an old screenshot. For each candidate, save the repository, pinned revision, skill subdirectory, license and dependency notes. Inspect SKILL.md, referenced files, network destinations and write operations. Prefer inspectable open source packages by task fit, documentation, maintenance and adaptation cost rather than install counts. Downloading a repository is different from installing one package, and neither action is a reason to execute every script in it. Use a supported project or personal skill location, keeping each package's SKILL.md and relative resources intact. Current Cursor documentation lists project roots including .cursor/skills and .agents/skills, with corresponding user roots. Verify the exact scope against the running environment. Do not overwrite an existing directory without comparing its contents. Check identifier, folder and metadata consistency when discovery fails; copying only the instruction body can omit required helpers. Use a reviewable project package for shared workflows and personal scope for individual preferences. Verify one small package first through Cursor's skill interface, then select it explicitly in Agent chat when testing invocation. Interface details can differ by version. A new session helps distinguish stale session state, but restarting repeatedly cannot fix the wrong environment, missing files or a description that does not match the task. Deliver an installation record containing source revision, target path, file structure, discovery result, prerequisites and actions not executed. Do not assume remote or cloud work inherits every skill from the local personal directory. Verify availability where the agent actually runs instead of using a local screenshot as remote installation evidence.
Scenario two: attach skills to a complete development loop
Reproduce the calendar defect before editing. Select the documentary category, move to another month, return and observe the filter. State the intended behavior, example dates and empty-result state. Ask the agent to trace component state and route parameters before proposing a small change. A request to optimize everything creates too many moving parts to evaluate the contribution of a skill. React Best Practices fits the React implementation-pattern review step. Its SkillPI listing and pinned Vercel package have been verified, with MIT licensing. Use it for matching React or Next implementation and performance concerns. It does not define the archive's product rules or establish a performance improvement. Read the relevant material rather than rewriting the application to demonstrate every pattern. Separate static checks from behavior acceptance. Preserve commands, outcomes and reasons for checks not run. Inspect the diff for unrelated formatting or dependency changes. Webapp Testing fits local page regression. Its pinned Anthropic source and Apache-2.0 license have been checked. It supports Python Playwright observation, interaction, screenshots and logs for a running local web application. It requires a startup command, port, fixtures and dependencies; it is not a Cursor installer and does not establish backend persistence. Check category selection, month navigation, empty results and the agreed refresh behavior. Distinguish browser assertions from claims needing API evidence. One screenshot is not coverage of every path. Tie results to a revision and fixture set. If the service does not start, report that limitation instead of describing unexecuted tests as passes. The Chinese original emphasizes reusable prompts and project rules. Capture the successful request as a template with reproduction, expected result, scope, prohibited changes and acceptance. Place durable conventions in appropriately scoped rules and task procedures in skills. Rules have multiple application modes; describing every rule as permanently active is misleading. Resolve conflicting instructions instead of duplicating the same requirement across several files. The English original also emphasizes keybindings. Choose one frequent transition, such as moving between editing and Agent chat, and inspect the installed version's bindings and conflicts. Avoid copying a shortcut from another operating system or an old release. Shortcuts reduce interaction overhead; they do not prove that a skill loaded or replace diff review and acceptance. Preserve prior configuration and validate changes individually rather than making a full shortcut import a prerequisite for skills.
Scenario three: maintain a library instead of accumulating packages
Track name, source, pinned revision, scope, owner, typical task, last use and acceptance date. Compare same-named packages by content and origin. When packages overlap, choose a primary procedure rather than expecting the agent to resolve contradictory methods. Do not assume a personal package always overrides a project package; check actual discovery and selection behavior. Keep a recoverable inventory when retiring unused packages and review changes to shared project packages normally. Before updating, inspect differences in scripts, dependencies, network destinations and requested permissions. Preserve the previous revision and use the same calendar fixtures to compare outputs. Identical descriptions do not guarantee identical content, and a discovery platform's summary is not a safety guarantee for later updates. A versioned inventory can be adequate for a small library; a separate management framework is not always justified. If repeated corrections reveal a stable method, such as routinely forgetting the empty-month case, consider a project skill. Gather successful and failing examples, applicability and exclusions before writing steps and acceptance criteria. Do not turn a one-off repair into a permanent universal instruction. Remove real accounts, sensitive logs and credentials from shared templates. A generated SKILL.md becomes a useful team capability only after repeated task validation. A new teammate cloning the repository still needs dependencies, tools and authorized access. Handoff instructions should include startup, fixtures, invocation and failure handling. Across agents, verify supported directories and features separately. A portable format does not imply identical execution capabilities on every platform.
A practical request
“Confirm that this environment discovers the calendar's required skills and list their source and dependencies without executing unknown scripts. Reproduce the cross-month filter defect and modify only the relevant state flow. Review matching patterns with the React skill, then verify category, month, empty-result and refresh behavior with the web testing skill. Deliver the diff, actual execution record, unexecuted checks and recovery method. Do not deploy.” This request separates discovery, invocation and acceptance into assessable outcomes. If discovery is needed first, verify the official SkillPI Skill Finder repository, license and installation prerequisites before asking it for task-specific candidates. Discovery narrows choices; it does not guarantee every package is suitable, free or safe. This guide does not invent catalog associations for unverified installers or library managers.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
Nothing appears after installation: check the actual runtime environment, destination, SKILL.md, metadata and referenced resources, then version support and discovery status. Do not begin by deleting the entire library. A package appears but is unused: check relevance, explicit-invocation settings and the current invocation interface. Ask for the procedure and evidence used rather than accepting a mention of the name as proof. Can a personal skill become a team skill? Check licensing, organizational policy and contents before sharing, and remove sensitive configuration. How many packages should be installed? There is no universal number. Decide through task coverage, conflicts and maintenance cost rather than assuming more is stronger. Is a one-click installer necessary? Small manual installations may be easier to inspect. Before using a CLI, establish its source, target agent and write scope; installing the entire registry should not be the default. What proves success? The inventory establishes location, discovery evidence establishes visibility, the task record establishes where the method was applied, and behavioral checks establish acceptance. Identify any missing link explicitly. Refresh article associations with the same discipline: recheck public availability, pinned source, license and exact purpose instead of adding unrelated links as the catalog grows.
Sources and scope
The paired originals cover installation, everyday use and library maintenance, with different emphasis on reusable prompts and shortcuts. This guide retains those distinctions while replacing obsolete setup assumptions and unsupported popularity or automatic-availability claims. References are current Cursor Skills and Rules documentation and the linked packages' pinned sources. All examples are operating instructions, not reports of installation or application testing performed for this article.
