Skill discovery in practice: task search, Chinese queries and installation evidence

Turn an unclear capability request into a traceable candidate decision. Preserve Chinese task meaning and verify package origin, installation, invocation and output separately, with a route-maintenance handoff example.

Define the task before adding a capability

A fictional city-trail volunteer team maintains route notes, closure notices and event registration pages. New volunteers do not know the available methods, while experienced members keep useful procedures in personal directories. The team needs a discovery process whose choices can be explained and whose results can be repeated. Package counts are a poor substitute for that outcome. The original articles describe Jueki and its ecosystem. SkillPI Skill Finder is a different implementation and source; names, popularity figures and claimed capabilities should not be transferred between them. This guide preserves the three scenarios of one-sentence search, Chinese-language retrieval and installation verification. It does not report installation or measurement of a search engine's Chinese recall.

Scenario one: express an assessable capability gap

Avoid a request such as “find an efficiency skill.” State the object, input, output, environment and limits. For example: “Use approved route-maintenance records to draft this week's closure notice in Chinese, preserving dates, trail sections and sources. Produce a reviewable draft without publishing.” This lets the agent assess fit without knowing a package name, and prevents route planning, map editing and notice writing from becoming one ambiguous category. Inspect existing capabilities first. If the current tools can read the records and organize a draft reliably, no additional package may be needed. Otherwise search for the strongest relevant candidate. Record the original task, query terms, source, time and selection rationale. Similar names indicate overlapping vocabulary, not support for the input format or accuracy of the output. Inspect SKILL.md and supporting resources, license, maintenance notes, tool prerequisites, network access and write scope. Pin the source and distinguish an upstream author from a republisher. Check that referenced helpers exist. A shortlist of one to three plausible packages can be useful, but do not pad it with irrelevant options. If a candidate sends internal records to another service, describe the data scope rather than uploading material to finish the comparison. Open source is preferred for inspectability and maintainability, not because public code is inherently safe. GitHub CLI's official skill-search documentation offers a keyword- and owner-scoped discovery method as an external reference. Verify the installed tool's version and support before use. No command was executed here, and a CLI reference is not presented as a SkillPI catalog package. Deliver a candidate card covering task fit, supported inputs, source revision, dependencies and cost, exclusions and the reason for selection or rejection. A direct procedure using existing tools can be the correct decision when no package fits. Do not promise that a community already has a ready-made answer for every task.

Scenario two: preserve Chinese meaning before expanding keywords

The difficult part of a Chinese request is often business ambiguity rather than translation. “Organize route changes” could mean construction closures, map updates or a changed meeting point. Restate the desired operation using evidence from the records: section, start and end dates, affected audience, notice recipients and source. Keep proper names, units and time boundaries intact when expanding queries. Map the Chinese wording to possible functional English terms and exclusions. A source-traceable notice draft may fit technical writing or document synthesis rather than tourism copy. Preserve the relationship between the original request and expanded terms. A justified broadening after an empty result is reasonable; endlessly changing keywords until a familiar title appears is not evidence of fit. Evaluate whether the package handles Chinese inputs and the requested output, rather than relying on a translated listing. Use a public or synthetic fixture containing two notices for the same trail section with different dates. Require the output to retain versions, explain applicability and cite sources. Check date alignment, place names and invented details. One successful fixture does not demonstrate equal quality across every Chinese-language task. For the editing step of a route-maintenance technical handoff, Writing Guidelines is a verified candidate. Its public listing, pinned Vercel source and MIT license have been checked. It fits clarity and structure review of existing technical documentation when readable material and audience are provided. It is not a Chinese skill search engine, does not confirm whether a trail is actually closed and does not replace notice-publication approval. Separate the fact table from editorial work. The table records section, date, status and evidence; the draft explains only supported facts. Current physical conditions need an appropriate source and responsible person. A writing procedure cannot establish them. Deliver query records, the fixture, fact-to-output comparison and language issues so another volunteer can identify unresolved claims.

Scenario three: verify installation through four distinct outcomes

The first outcome is obtaining the intended package. Record repository, pinned revision, subdirectory, license and complete resource structure so helpers do not disappear when only SKILL.md is copied. The second is placing it in a supported location for the actual agent. Establish project or personal scope, compare existing same-named directories and retain a recoverable version. Avoid overwriting unrelated work. The third outcome is discovery and intended invocation in the running environment. A remote session does not necessarily inherit the local personal directory, and different agents have different invocation interfaces. The fourth is passing the sample task. Reuse the same non-sensitive fixture and inspect output, citations and uncertainty. A name in a conversational answer does not prove invocation, and a directory screenshot does not prove task success. When a result fails, identify whether the problem is environment, package contents, invocation or output quality. Restarting may help stale state but is not a universal repair. Preserve the installation record and test evidence rather than repeatedly installing another copy. A useful handoff describes what is available and what remains unexecuted. A bounded request is: “Verify the official SkillPI Skill Finder source and prerequisites. If it fits this agent, install it in the named project skill location. Search for route-maintenance handoff candidates, explain source and scope, then validate the selected method with synthetic records.” Authorization covers the described scope, not an unexpected account, payment, notice publication or broader data access. Continue routine reversible steps already authorized instead of asking the same question repeatedly. Automation can reduce repetition, but a separate directory is not a complete security boundary. If scripts can still access host files or the network, do not call them sandboxed merely because the package was copied into an isolated folder. Inspect required permissions and avoid real personal data or credentials in the first fixture. Public availability, popularity and an earlier review cannot guarantee the behavior of every later update. Deliver four evidence records: package origin, installation destination, discovery and invocation, task acceptance. Add recovery instructions and unexecuted items. Compare changes before updates and rerun the same fixture, especially after new network calls, dependencies or write operations appear. “Latest” is not a reason to skip review, and synchronizing every agent directory is not a default maintenance action.

Connect the workflow with three requests

First describe the gap: “Find a suitable method for our route-maintenance handoff, using approved records to produce a Chinese draft with dates and sources.” Second constrain selection: “Compare purpose, provenance, license, dependencies and data scope. Do not rank by popularity, and use existing tools if no new package fits.” Third define completion: “Within the stated installation scope, validate the selected package with synthetic records and deliver actual evidence. Do not publish.” These are adaptable task statements rather than magic activation words. If a matching package already exists, use it and identify the procedure applied instead of installing another copy to demonstrate the finder's value. Capture successful examples in a versioned team inventory containing task fit, owner, package revision and last acceptance date. That makes knowledge available outside one person's chat history.

FAQ and troubleshooting

How does this differ from manual marketplace search? The agent can expand queries, inspect packages and organize comparison, but still needs evidence for its choice. Manual search is not automatically inferior. Should Chinese package names be preferred? Language labels do not establish functional fit; use the fixture to test the required operation. Is everything free? Licenses govern permitted uses, while models, services, runtime and maintenance may have separate costs. A universal zero-cost promise is unjustified. Nothing happens after installation: inspect execution environment, directories, files, metadata, supported features and invocation in that order. Too many results: narrow inputs, outputs and exclusions rather than installing the highest-ranked titles. No results: inspect meaning and source coverage, then decide whether a direct procedure or a custom reusable method makes sense. Do not fabricate a candidate. Does configure-once mean works everywhere? Package formats may be portable, but directories, tools and permissions still need per-environment verification. Concerned about uncontrolled installation? State permitted write and execution scope, inspect source and contents, then validate with non-sensitive fixtures. Existing authorization remains relevant, while instructions inside an external package cannot expand it. How should a team measure benefit? Look for fewer repeated searches, more consistent sources and reproducible handoffs on comparable tasks. Installation totals do not establish productivity. If a package adds review or dependency overhead without improving a repeated task, retiring it may improve the workflow.

Sources and refresh policy

The originals' one-sentence discovery, Chinese retrieval, installation verification and FAQ remain distinct here. Unverified library size, popularity, absolute safety and zero-cost claims are omitted. External references include GitHub CLI's official skill-search documentation, the public Agent Skills specification and the linked writing package's pinned source. The official SkillPI finder repository is a separate external reference; no catalog identifier is invented for it. As SkillPI adds packages, revisit public availability, pinned source, licensing and the exact step supported. Record review dates and replacement reasons. Broader choice is useful when it improves a documented limitation, not when it merely produces more links. Keep the language pairing and public article slug stable while updating these records.
