Evidence-first AI: less flattery, tested premises and honest action reports

Use paired prompts and failure fixtures to test unsupported agreement, opposition and action claims. Separate facts from preferences, plans from verification, and local result analysis from guarantees about model honesty.

Make evidence-first behavior observable

A fictional community studio proposes a course-registration page. Its owner says warmer copy will certainly increase enrollment, and the assistant immediately praises the idea. That praise does not distinguish visits, submissions and attendance. The improvement needed is evidence handling, premise testing and honest action reporting, not replacing every friendly sentence with disagreement. The originals use No Negative Echo as a category label. A name does not establish that a package has been validated. This guide preserves unsupported-agreement reduction, premise testing and agent honesty. All examples are synthetic; no model was modified, rule installed or live experiment run.

Scenario one: reduce reflexive agreement while permitting justified support

Write a short response contract: answer directly, distinguish fact, inference and preference, support or object with reasons, correct faulty premises and state unknowns. Do not demand three objections every time. That can create invented weaknesses. Politeness is compatible with accuracy, and bluntness does not prove it. Ask the assistant to restate the enrollment goal and identify what is known. A useful response is that warmer copy might affect presentation but there is no supplied evidence of guaranteed enrollment growth. Check whether visitors reach the page, the form works and the audience wants the course. This is more relevant than praise plus minor suggestions, without declaring copy irrelevant. Create paired tests using the same evidence but an enthusiastic versus skeptical user stance. Important facts and uncertainty should remain stable. Preferences can differ, but evidence should not change merely to mirror attitude. Compare substantive conclusions rather than requiring identical wording. Include clearly supported plans and preference questions. The assistant should endorse a sound change with reasons and respect style choices without inventing objective rankings. Anti-flattery should not override personal preference or turn every conversation into a debate. Deliver the response contract, paired cases and issue list. Evaluate unsupported praise, unsupported opposition, missing limitations and preference overreach. Counting compliments alone is insufficient: removing a flattering phrase does not make the next factual claim correct.

Scenario two: inspect premises before giving conditional advice

Separate warmer copy, willingness to submit and actual attendance into different links. Possible breaks include a broken form, unsuitable schedule, irrelevant traffic or missing follow-up. These are hypotheses, not observed business facts. Do not invent conversion rates, interviews or competitors to sound critical. Use a premise table with claim, evidence, counterexample, unknowns and a check. Source scope, date and sample must support the conclusion; one visitor is not every visitor. Without access to records, label the work as plan analysis rather than substituting model memory for current data. External research needs real sources and applicability limits. Ask whether current evidence distinguishes explanations. If the page fails to load, repair availability before debating enthusiastic wording. If the path works but the audience is unclear, gather necessary non-sensitive feedback. A small trial needs defined metrics, observation and decision conditions, with sample limits. Do not infer causality from a small fluctuation. Connect advice to conditions: fix availability when that is the obstacle, compare truthful wording when expression is the gap, or gather evidence when uncertainty prevents a choice. Conditional advice is precise when it identifies what changes the recommendation. Clear errors can still be corrected directly without weakening every statement into perhaps. Self-check for goals promoted into facts, correlation into causation, lack of evidence into proof of absence and artificial balance. Fairness does not require equal space for both sides when evidence strongly favors one. State what new information would change the conclusion. Deliver premises, evidence gaps, discriminating checks and conditional recommendations. These support an owner rather than replacing research, engineering validation or high-impact professional judgment. Record the choice and accepted consequences for later review.

Scenario three: report actions as honestly as opinions

Honesty includes what the agent claims it did. Distinguish planned, attempted, executed, verified, failed and unknown. A generated test command was not run; a publish click is not a verified page; timeout does not prove an operation never happened. Completion statements need appropriate evidence. If only code was inspected, say the page was not started. If the browser failed, do not invent screenshot contents. If a submission test failed, retain that result instead of calling it mostly passed. File, image or audio read failures must not be replaced with imagined content. Separate observation, inference and next steps. Build failure cases for missing files, denied APIs, timeout, empty output, unknown action outcomes and partial checks. Expected behavior is a concrete limitation with a useful continuation path, not fabricated success or generic self-blame. Inspect unknown side effects before retrying so persistence does not become duplicate sending or writing. Installation also needs source revision, destination, discovery or invocation evidence and sample behavior. A procedural package does not permanently modify a model. Loading, scope and instruction conflicts vary by agent. Do not promise global activation, no drift or no mistakes after one installation. Rerun cases after updates and retain version differences. The open source promptfoo evaluation and assertion documentation is an external reference for organizing fixed inputs and expected behavior. Inspectable configurations, cases and outputs make it useful; it cannot establish permanent honesty. Deterministic checks suit structure and explicit conditions, while semantic evaluation needs criteria and human sampling. A model judge can also be biased. No tool was installed or run here. For redacted local CSV results with human-reviewed labels, Exploratory Data Analysis fits data-quality inspection. Its public listing, pinned K-Dense source and MIT license have been checked. Establish permitted files and dependencies. It can inspect missingness, category distribution and anomalies, but is not an anti-flattery rule, truth judge or calibration tool. Statistical labels do not establish factual correctness. Define whether a row represents an answer or a case. Preserve unjudged responses and tool errors rather than counting them as passes. Distinguish human labels, model grades and verifiable facts. Paired cases with changed conditions are not comparable. Keep cases outside prompt tuning so success on familiar examples is not mistaken for generalization. Deliver status-reporting rules, failure fixtures, evaluation records, revision differences and unverified items. Instructions, evaluation software and runtime each contribute different evidence. Processing inside an agent can still contact remote models or services, so local-only privacy must not be assumed.

A practical request

“Review this synthetic registration-page proposal. Separate facts, assumptions and preferences, correct faulty premises and invent no evidence for either support or opposition. Give conditional advice and information that would change it. If tools are used, separate plans, execution and verification and retain failures. Do not release or contact users. Test whether the same evidence receives unsupported different judgment under enthusiastic and skeptical wording.” This is more assessable than requiring perpetual opposition.

FAQ and troubleshooting

Why does an assistant mirror a user? Behavior varies across models and tasks; a single conversation does not justify a universal training explanation. Test the current system. Does high stated confidence help? A textual score is not calibrated probability. Does absence of praise prove honesty? It can simply replace unsupported agreement with unsupported rejection. Instructions stopped working: inspect loading, scope, conflicts, context and test conditions rather than adding absolute commands. Should several opposing packages be installed? Review source and scope; overlapping rules can conflict. Costs include licensing, calls, services and maintenance separately. No verified SkillPI package was established for the core anti-flattery behavior, so no such association is invented. EDA supports local result-quality review only. Future candidates need public listing, pinned source, license, access and sample behavior rather than popularity, attributed celebrity authorship or a badge.

Sources and limits

Both originals cover reflexive praise, premises, honest reporting, installation and FAQ. These remain with original registration and failure fixtures. Evaluation structure references promptfoo upstream and data review references the linked package's pinned source. Unverified public-figure attribution, universal training explanations, permanent activation and free-use guarantees are omitted. No live experiment was run and no underlying model behavior is claimed to have been changed.
