Survey reliability: scoring checks, measurement evidence and reproducible statistics

Review a course-experience questionnaire through reverse scoring, missing-data policy, internal consistency, design-aware comparisons and carefully bounded advanced models.

Reliability analysis should explain how a set of items behaves under a particular scoring rule and sample, not search for a number that automatically approves a thesis. This guide uses a fictional community-course experience survey to connect scale assessment, overall survey statistics, open responses and advanced models. No respondent data were read and no alpha was calculated here; these are an analysis plan whose conclusions require actual evidence and design review.

Align the questionnaire and data dictionary

One row per respondent and one column per item is only the beginning. Preserve wording, allowed values, intended construct, scoring direction, missing codes and the scoring source. The example has proposed course-organization and participation-experience dimensions. A shared five-point response format is not a reason to combine every item into one score. Keep demographic and open-response fields outside the alpha calculation.

Preserve a sanitized original and write scored data separately. Check repeated submissions, out-of-range values, numeric-looking text and the difference between skipped and unanswered items. Exclusion criteria follow the design and need counts and reasons; do not remove inconvenient responses to increase a coefficient. Sample adequacy depends on quality, parameters and model complexity, not a universal requirement to collect three hundred forms.

Exploratory Data Analysis fits the local CSV, TSV or JSON quality checkpoint for missingness, distributions, duplicate candidates and unusual columns. Specify sanitized inputs, data root and output directory, with Python and format dependencies available. It is not a psychometrics engine or validity certification and must not print identifying raw responses or overwrite inputs.

Stage one: distinguish consistency, stability and validity

Cronbach's alpha describes one aspect of internal consistency for specified items and scoring in a sample. It is not test-retest stability, proof of one dimension or validation of the intended interpretation. Familiar thresholds are contextual heuristics: item count, redundant content and sample characteristics influence the value. Report items, sample, missing-data policy and uncertainty rather than treating one cutoff as a sufficient quality certificate.

Analyze prespecified dimensions and inspect item distributions, inter-item relationships and corrected item-total relationships. Reverse items according to the scoring manual, not a model's guess from negative wording. For a confirmed reverse-coded five-point item, six minus the observed score reverses the endpoints while preserving three. Keep the original field and leave missing responses missing. Other scales need their actual endpoints.

When alpha is very low or negative, inspect scoring, selected columns, units and dimensional structure before declaring the questionnaire unusable. Alpha-if-deleted is diagnostic information, not an instruction to remove items until a target appears. Deletion can damage construct coverage. Record theoretical justification and sensitivity, and distinguish exploratory purification from a confirmatory claim made on the same repeatedly optimized sample.

Omega, composite reliability and AVE depend on an appropriate measurement model and parameter meaning; they are not extra formulas that can certify any table. Convergent and discriminant evidence, HTMT and Fornell-Larcker-style diagnostics need contextual interpretation rather than one decisive threshold. Ordinal, nonnormal and multidimensional data require suitable correlations, estimators and reviewed assumptions. Validity concerns evidence for particular interpretations and uses, not a single test of whether a scale is accurate.

Worked example: correct scoring before considering deletion

Suppose Q3 is a confirmed reverse item exported in its original direction and Q5 uses 99 for missing. Use the dictionary to convert 99 to missing, retaining original values and a transformation log. Reverse only valid five-point Q3 responses. Hand-check a few sanitized rows so missing data did not become negative scores. Analyze the two planned dimensions instead of computing one whole-survey alpha.

If Q3 still behaves differently, inspect meaning, translation, respondent understanding and possible method effects. “Deletion increases alpha” is not the only acceptable rationale. Plan expert content review or cognitive interviews and, where appropriate, assessment on an independent sample. Separate coding corrections, exploratory deletion and the original specification in the report so readers can understand why values changed.

Pingouin provides an existing alpha implementation worth considering, including pairwise or listwise missing-data handling and interval output. The choice affects information used and needs an explicit policy and effective-sample inspection. Check version, license, dependencies and method suitability before adoption. This article has not installed or run it, and readable source is not evidence that this questionnaire passed an analysis.

Stage two: let survey design determine statistics

Report the respondent flow and descriptives: invitations, returns, exclusions and effective sample for each analysis, along with item and scale distributions, missingness and floor or ceiling patterns. Convenience sampling does not become representative merely because it is large. State partial-missing scoring rules before computing totals or means so analyses do not silently use different definitions.

Choose comparisons and associations from the question, variable types, groups and repeated-measure structure. Check independence, estimand and relevant distribution or variance assumptions. Multiple responses from one person are not independent observations. Report effects, intervals, methods, assumptions and multiple-comparison handling instead of only p-values. Group score comparisons also need consideration of whether the construct is measured comparably across groups.

Batch output still requires a trace: columns, participants and missing-data policy for each calculation. Retain failed tests, nonconvergent models and unidentified specifications as explicit failures. Do not show only successful outputs. The agent executes an approved plan with records; it should not search many tests and invent a story around the significant ones.

Stage three: review open responses and advanced models separately

For open-ended comments, build a coding guide with sanitized response identifiers, meaning, themes and counterexamples. Allow multiple themes and do not interpret theme counts as population prevalence. A blank answer is not evidence that the respondent lacks that concern. Let a model suggest codes while people review boundaries and minority perspectives, preserving important experiences rather than only frequent statements.

The English source also highlights ANOVA, mixed models and mediation. Do not run every method just because a menu offers it. Repeated courses or organizational nesting may require dependent-data modeling. Mediation and moderation interpretations need design and identification assumptions; cross-sectional associations alone do not establish causal paths. Choose a structural equation model from theory and measurement design rather than automatically selecting the best-looking fit.

The official lavaan CFA tutorial illustrates specifying a measurement model, fitting it and inspecting convergence, parameters and fit information. It is a useful implementation reference, not a template this questionnaire can copy unchanged. Check estimator, identification, problematic parameters and interpretation. Familiar fit cutoffs do not resolve content, sample or theory problems. Report exploratory changes separately and preserve independent validation where appropriate.

Reproducible delivery and FAQ

A bounded request is: “Use only survey-clean.csv, codebook-v1 and analysis-plan-v1. Check item definitions, missingness and reverse scoring first and report anomalies. Preserve the original and return scoring logs, effective samples, code and result tables. Do not calculate unsupported measures. Return only sanitized identifiers and review suggestions for open responses. Do not message people, upload unauthorized data or claim unrun models passed.”

Can this be done without SPSS? Suitable code and methods can do the work, but output and assumptions still require review. Does high alpha establish validity? No: it is not a combined certificate for dimension, temporal stability and interpretation. Can AI identify reverse items automatically? Use the formal scoring source; a model may flag questions for review. Should all missing values receive the mean? Not by default: consider the missingness, design, method and sensitivity.

Will data remain local? Inspect actual file access, model requests, plugins, logs and cloud destinations. A local installation directory does not prove that nothing leaves the machine, and removing obvious identifiers is not absolute anonymity. Is the output thesis-ready? Review numbers, definitions, methods and interpretation before using it; automated tables are not research certification.

Compare future candidates on a fixed sanitized fixture, checking source, license, dependencies, missing-data policy and results before a step-specific association.
