Read an unfamiliar web repository by tracing one request

Follow a search interaction from startup through its route, query, and rendered result, then check the trace locally.

Pick one observable workflow in the repository. For a search page, read the README and dependency configuration and locate the entry point, routes, interface components, and tests. Record the commit so another reader can reproduce the trace.

Observe a running example

Use sample data in an isolated local environment. Search for a matching term and a term with no matches. Note the interface state and request address. If setup is blocked by configuration or data, record the missing dependency and use existing tests and examples to identify likely entry points.

Trace input to output

Locate the submit handler and follow request parameters through the server route, query conditions, and response fields. Identify how the interface renders matches, an empty result, and errors. Record the file and function for each stage.

Check the trace with a small test

Use Webapp Testing to organize a repeatable search check. Try a second query to confirm your reading of the parameters and result handling. Keep observed behavior and inferences separate so the next reader can find what remains uncertain.
